Everything You Need to Know About Ice Hockey Betting
Ice hockey, or simply hockey to most, is the most popular sport in Canada. If you are not up to date on your betting lingo or maybe you are looking to place your first bet on the sport, we are here to help get you started.
How is Ice Hockey Played?
The main governing body for ice hockey in North America is the National Hockey League (NHL). The league consists of 30 teams across Canada and the United States of America. In a typical season 82 games are played (41 at home, 41 away from home). The sheer volume of games means there’s always something around the corner to bet on.
The game is played between two teams of six players: five outfield and one goalie. To win one team must score more goals that the other by hitting a puck into the opponent’s goal. The game is split in three periods (3 x 20mins).
It is important to know what bets bookmakers usually offer and which bets you can place on hockey. Here are some of the most popular bets you can place on ice hockey today:
Match Result
The match result bet is a wager in which the punter places a bet on which team they think will win however the win must come within regulation time (60 minutes) and there cannot be any overtime in the game. This is one of the simplest bets you can put on ice hockey, great for beginners and loved by experts alike.
Puck Line Handicaps
Puck line handicaps bets are like spread bets however, in ice hockey betting the puck line is usually placed at 1.5 meaning the underdog gets a +1.5 handicap so if the punter backs them, they cannot lose by 2 or more goals. If you back the favourite, they get a -1.5-point handicap therefore, they must win by 2 or more points for the bet to land.
Goal Totals Over/Under
With over/under betting the bookmaker set some final combined scores and the punter then bets on if the game will surpass or fail to surpass that score. It is a good way to make the game of ice hockey a little more interesting.
Correct Score
Correct score bets are notoriously hard to land however, when they do land, they land big. Odds on correct score bets usually offer great value for the punter but are harder to predict.
