Background
When looking to learn about a team, looking at the background of the franchise is always going to be an excellent way of building knowledge and providing yourself with some insight.
The Detroit Lions currently play their home games at Ford Field, which is based in the city of Detroit and is in the state of Michigan. The Lions are the only team to play in the state, thus representing a significant number of people when they are on the gridiron.
Sheila Ford Hamp is the Detroit Lions owner and she continues to watch her team compete in the NFC North Division, with whom they compete against the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings for a place in the NFC playoffs. When trying to identify the team, a lion is used as the Detroit Lions logo, thus making it rather easy to spot them.
History
Something that not everyone may have known is that the Detroit Lions are not originally from the state of Michigan, with the team having initially been founded in Portsmouth, Ohio, and were originally known as the Portsmouth Spartans.
However, after being in the NFL for four years between 1930 and 1934, the team were forced to relocate as a result of the financial struggles that were being experienced, thus seeing them move to Detroit and subsequently being named the Detroit Lions. This name was chosen as it closely resembled the city’s Major League Baseball team’s name, the Detroit Tigers.
Honors
Unfortunately for the Detroit Lions, the team has not had the best of NFL records since being in the league, with the team’s main successes coming over half a decade ago. The team did manage to win four NFL Championship Games between 1935 and 1957, which some may realise was before the Super Bowl era.
However, since then, the team has only managed to win one single playoff game which happened in 1992 and are yet to advance beyond the NFC Championship Game as we begin the 2021 NFL Season. Indeed, this is an unwanted record that the team will hope will disappear soon, as it makes them the oldest NFL team not to appear in the Super Bowl, whilst it is the only team in the NFC not to have reached the main spectacle.
Detroit Lions Roster
The reasons as to why the Detroit Lions have not been able to reach the Super Bowl can not be down to the level of quality that they have had within their squad, as the Detroit Lions roster has featured a number of exceptional players.
When looking at the Detroit Lions depth chart over the years, individuals such as Lem Barney, Barry Sanders, Chris Spielman, Matt Stafford and Calvin ‘Megatron’ Johnson are all men who have appeared on the roster at some point or another, thus giving the team reason to believe that they had all the quality needed.
However, there were occasions when the Detroit Lions injury report was released that would have made things rather difficult for the franchise to compete.
Summary
Being a Detroit Lions fan can be a hard and challenging task for many, however there are many that will continue to back their team to finally break its Super Bowl duck. When they do, it might just be one of the biggest sports stories the NFL and the world has ever seen!
