New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are a professional American Football team that currently play their games in the tough NFC South Division. They are one of the well-supported teams within the NFL and one that many always look to as a potential favourite when placing wagers on them.

Background

The New Orleans Saints stadium is the Caesars Superdome, which is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, and it is one of the most impressive football stadiums that teams currently compete in. The venue is one that those who get to experience in person will remember forever.

The team is a member of the incredibly difficult NFC South Division, where they regularly compete with the Atlanta Falcons, the Carolina Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Indeed, the winner of this Division will typically be considered to be one of the favourites in the postseason.

The New Orleans Saints jersey is predominantly black and gold, although the team’s colors have appeared to be white and gold at times, as well, so do not be surprised when they line up in either.

History

The New Orleans Saints have an interesting history and one that would have to be considered to be a little unique compared to the other 31 member teams of the NFL currently active. The team was founded in 1966, however it was created by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans.

The team had then joined the 1967 NFL season as an expansion team and were given their name because of the jazz music heritage that can be found in the region. In particular, inspiration for the name came from the spiritual hymn “When the Saints Go Marching In”.

Honors

In the first couple of decades of existence, things were rather bleak for the New Orleans Saints, as they were actually considered to be one of the worst franchises to have ever competed in the NFL. One major reason many had this opinion of the team was because they had gone 20 consecutive seasons without a winning record or being able to qualify for the postseason.

Of course, things did start to change for the organisation and subsequently improve over time, with the 1987 season being the first where they qualified for the playoffs. It did take them to 2000 to achieve its first win in the playoffs, though.

Nonetheless, the turn of the millennium changed the team’s fortunes and saw them become one of the most consistent and biggest challengers for the Super Bowl. They won the top title in 2009 at Super Bowl XLIV, but have yet to reach the spectacle once again (as of the end of the 2020 NFL season).

New Orleans Saints Players & Icons

The New Orleans Saints roster has featured a number of impressive players in recent years, including the likes of Alvin Kamara, Mark Ingram, and the legendary New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees. However, it should be noted that some would argue that the New Orleans Saints depth chart needs to be stronger if they are to compete with their NFC rivals.

There have been others to have played for the team that have huge reputations, including Reggie Bush, Morten Andersen, Willie Roaf and Rickey Jackson.

Summary

The New Orleans Saints are an interesting franchise and one that many will immediately look to back when thinking about a dark horse for a Super Bowl run, although there will be many that will know that an New Orleans Saints injury report can be the be-all and end-all for their chances in matches at times.

It is certainly worth keeping an eye on what the Saints do in the future as they can be a rather rewarding team to back.
