History
The Seattle Seahawks entered the NFL as an expansion team in 1976 and initially competed in the AFC West before being switched to the NFC West in 2002. The team was one of the two teams to have been given a franchise licence in 1974 when the NFL decided to try and increase the number of teams from 26 to 28 when the AFL-NFL merger took place in 1970.
The team was created after the Seattle Professional Football Inc., a group of Seattle business and community leaders, announced its intention to acquire an NFL franchise for the city of Seattle and were successful in doing so.
The Seattle Seahawks got its name for the franchise in 1975 after a public naming contest saw more than 20,000 different entries and over 1,700 names were provided.
Honors
Since being established as an NFL team, the Seattle Seahawks has managed to build a solid history for itself over the years. As of the end of the 2020 NFL season, the team has managed to win 10 division titles, as well as three Conference Championships. Prior to the change in division, they had played in the AFC Conference Game as well, thus making them the only team to have played in both.
Additionally, the Seahawks have been able to play in three Super Bowls thus far, with the team making its first appearance in Super Bowl XL (which they lost) before playing in back-to-back Super Bowls (winning one and losing the next).
