What is the PGA European Golf Tour and how does it operate?

The PGA European Tour is the organisation that conducts the leading golf tour within Europe and has been in existence since 1972, with the inaugural season having commenced over the course of that year and since becoming a key part of the golf calendar.

The PGA European Tour is actually a golfer-controlled organisation that has the primary purpose of being able to maximise the income of tournament golfers.

Many of the events that take place on the circuit feature within the western part of the continent, with locations such as the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France and Spain being traditionally used, although there have been a number of high-profile events that have taken place outside of Europe.

Biggest Events on the European Golf Tour

There are a number of huge events that have been added to the PGA European Golf Tour over the years, most notable the three U.S. majors – the Masters, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. Each of these major competitions were added to the circuit in 1998, thus allowing the best players from the European Tour to compete and test themselves against the best players who continue to appear on the PGA Tour in the States.

In addition, the World Golf Championships (WGC) were added to the schedule in 1999, which provided an additional three events that offer a lot more in prize money, which is where the European PGA Tour leaderboard can look a little chaotic at times.

Other huge tournaments on the European Golf Tour include the Race to Dubai events, which replaced the old Order of Merit competition and sees a huge prize pot be split between the best 15 golfers in the rankings for that year based on points collected, whilst the Rolex Series is a series of different events that can each be rather lucrative for the winning golfer.

Popular Players & Biggest Names on PGA European Tour

There are a number of world-famous golfers who have participated on the European PGA Tour over the years, although some have been more successful than others in regards to the amount of prize money that they have been able to win throughout their careers.

As of September 2021, Lee Westwood held the number one spot on the European PGA Tour leaderboard, whilst Rory McIlroy was close behind. Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose finished out the top five, but there are so many exceptional golfers on the list, showing just how competitive the PGA European Golf Tour really is.

Summary

The European Golf Tour is one of the premier golfing events to take place throughout the year, with a number of world-class golfers continuing to take to the various courses and competing for some of the biggest prizes the sport has to offer.
