What is the CPL and how does it operate?
The Canadian Premier League is the professional soccer league within Canada and is one of the newest professional sports competitions to have been created within the country. Indeed, the tournament was only founded in 2017 and the first CPL Canada season was only as recent as 2019.
The competition operates with a league format that is incredibly easy to understand and follow, with the traditional points system being used to determine the CPL standings at the end of the season (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw).
At the end of the regular season, in which CPL teams will play a total of 28 games, the top four teams in the CPL standings will then compete in a playoff tournament that will feature single-elimination games to determine the overall CPL Champion.
CPL Teams
Due to the competition still being relatively new, more and more teams are continually being added to the CPL standings each year. As of the 2021 Canadian Premier League Soccer season, there is a total of eight teams all competing.
These teams feature all across the country, with five of them from Canadaβs ten provinces. Ontario has three soccer clubs, whilst Alberta has two with Novia Scotia, British Columbia and Manitoba each boasting one side each.
This shows that the appeal teams in the CPL Canada has for them is continuing to grow, whilst there is also rumoured discussions about adding even more teams that could make this league even more competitive and then, subsequently, more popular.
Are there any other events?
In addition to the CPL, there is an opportunity for the best performing team to go on a Continental adventure that could further expose the CPL Canada has to offer to the rest of the region.
The Canadian Championship is a competition that will see teams compete against the three MLS Canada sides (Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver) as well as the Tier 3 league champions for a place in the CONCACAF Champions League in a two-legged knockout format.
Additionally, the winner of the CPL will go on to play in the CONCACAF League where they will face other teams from Central America and the Caribbean for one of the six spots that are available in the CONCACAF Champions League.

CPL soccer is continuing to grow and expand throughout Canada and it is becoming increasingly more popular with sports fans in the country who like to bet on the action.
