Major League Soccer (MLS)

The MLS is the top soccer league in North America and Canada is able to boast a handful of teams within the competition that largely takes place across the United States of America.

What is the MLS and how does it operate?

The MLS, which is also known as Major League Soccer, is the elite soccer competition that many Canadians will be familiar with, as the sport and the league continues to grow in popularity, in regards to participation as well as viewership.

The MLS boasts a number of different teams from all corners of North America, with the MLS map spreading as far west as California, as far east as New York, as far south as Texas & Florida, as well as far north as Canada.

In fact, the MLS is growing in such appeal that there are plans to expand it in the future, with a number of expansion teams being added, which is something many who watch MLS soccer will have already seen happen.

The regular season of the competition takes place from late February or early March and runs to October, with each team being geographically divided into two Conferences – the Eastern and Western Conference. A total of 34 games will be played (meaning each team will not always play the same opponent twice) before a playoff system will be contested between the best 14 teams for the MLS Cup in a single-elimination competition.

MLS Teams

A total of 27 teams currently comprise MLS soccer at the moment, although there are plans to turn that number into 30 in the very near future. As mentioned, the teams involved cover many corners of North America, thus making the MLS map a rather large one for teams to cover when they compete against each other when the schedule is released.

Furthermore, 24 of the 27 teams currently involved in the league play their football in the US, whilst there are 3 MLS Canada teams that are also involved within the competition. These franchises are Toronto FC, Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps, with the latter of the duo competing in the Western Conference whereas the others compete in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto FC is currently the most successful team to represent the MLS Canada has managed to provide, with the club having won at least one MLS Cup in their history.

Are there any other events?

The MLS soccer season might appear to be a little hectic at times with so many different teams competing with each other for the honour of being the MLS Cup Champions, however that does not mean there are still a number of other competitions that teams can fight for.

For instance, there is the MLS All-Star Game that takes place at the midway point of the season, although this format has continued to be changed over the years. Furthermore, their finish in the MLS soccer season could result in qualification to play in Continental football competitions.

Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver will all compete against other Canadian sides in the Canadian Championship for their one CONCACAF Champions League berth that has been allocated to the country.
