What is Wimbledon and how does it operate?
Known as Wimbledon or the Wimbledon Championships, the tennis competition is the oldest in the sport as it dates back to 1877 and has regularly been competed on an annual basis, with just a total of 10 editions having been missed for various factors such as the World Wars since its inception.
The competition is the third of the major Grand Slams to be competed for in a tennis season, with it coming after the Australian Open and the Roland Garros but it is a few months before the US Open.
There are a number of shock Wimbledon results that take place each year, but that could well be down to the fact that it is the only major that is continued to be played on grass.
When is Wimbledon and where is it played?
Famously, the Wimbledon schedule is competed on the grass courts of SW19 and at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. There are a total of 19 courts that are in use for the entirety of the Wimbledon tennis competition, although the main courts are Centre Court (which features many of the finals contested) as well as Court 1.
The tennis tournament is traditionally scheduled to take place at the beginning of the English summer with a two-week period spanning the end of June and early July usually being slated as the slot within the calendar. Unfortunately due to the English weather, this can be a great thing, or it can be a rather testing and challenging time because of the rainfall that can be experienced.
